Window and the Rain and the River

C. 1998 Jackie Tice

There was the rain
There was the river
There was some hope
If just a sliver
I watch from deep
Inside my room
Through the window
With the rain
And you

I was alone
Nowhere to turn
Nowhere to hide
Or cry or burn
But still it drove
Like hurricanes
At the window
With you
And the rain

I watched for days
And weeks and years
My eyes were glazed
By pain or fear
You tried to speak to me
But I was drained
By the window
With you
And the rain

It rained so hard
I nearly drowned
But for my room
My gaze would cloud
But I was saved
I kept my view
Of the window
The rain
And you

This room is tall
It’s strong and lit
Its yellow walls
Don’t lean a bit
But clearly seen
And in my way
Was the window
With you
And the rain

The window tilts
It cocks my head
It does not close
It won’t be dead
This point I take
I stare, I strain
At the window
With you
And the rain

I turn around
See only walls
No doors to free me
If I find another opening
Maybe somewhere in this room
A light will shine through

There was the rain
There was the river
There was some hope
If just a sliver
I lie awake
Inside my room
With the window
The rain…………………and you
