In These Bones

Roaming freely on the plains
Sacred mammal, sacred name
Giving back all you take
Through this body you forsake

Restless spirit, restless bones
All the knowledge that you own
It is given you to loan
Now you live on in these bones

Wall of bronze, wall of honor
You are your Grandfather’s holder
Of the secrets and the soul
To this land that we behold

Born of body, flesh and blood
Passing through the door and done
Though your spirit often moans
Still you live on in these bones

You’re out of place
In this form you take
But your mysteries are real
And your struggles disappear

Here’s your jaw and there’s your thigh
Your pelvis and your spine
Ribs and legs, all weathered now
Bison bones, to you I bow

All the miles you have roamed
Over mountains over roads
Thought you’d die in fields alone
But you live on in these bones

Thought you’d die in fields alone
Still you live on in these bones
